A Mini Rant on Winter Driving in Columbus…

It took me 50 minutes to get to work today.  FIFTY.  On a typical day it will take me anywhere between 15 and 20, depending if I go by the high school when the school zone (20mph) is active.  What happened today that cause this traffic snarl and almost shut down the major thoroughfares in the city?  A half inch of snow.

Yes, I said a half inch.  Actually, I think a half inch is being generous.  There’s not even a thin sheen of ice, black or otherwise, to create this traffic nightmare.  This isn’t Atlanta, people.  We’ve driven through 8 inches before and things went perfectly fine.  In fact, there are LESS traffic accidents / incidents / whatever when the snow level is higher.  It seems that people in Ohio have two speeds: fast when it’s dry, wet, and just a little bit snowy and slow for when the weather is obviously treacherous.  There is no in-between.  They also aren’t aware that there should be varying stopping differences for different weather conditions.  I can’t tell you how many people didn’t leave themselves enough clear stopping distance from the car in front of them and slid to a stop inches away from the other car’s bumper or had to swerve off to the side to avoid hitting someone.

And one other thing… at least in Ohio, the people who are getting OFF the freeway have the right of way on the exit ramps, not the people who are getting ON.  Rules of the road people, rules of the road.

Ok,  </end rant>.

Boy, you’d never survive here. These people are, bar none, the worst drivers in any of the almost 30 states I’ve visited.

Usually I can take it but today was just an off day. People almost plowing into me tend to make me a bit pissy.

Ohioans weren’t bad, as an aside. It was January when we went through.

January isn’t bad because for some reason it’s too cold for a lot of snow most of the time. February (and occasionally March!) is when we usually get pounded. Oh, and people aren’t AS stupid on the freeway. They’re aware that speed kills. It’s the side streets and so-called ‘feeder’ or ‘collector’ streets where you have to watch. They’re lowest on the city’s priority list to be treated (and rightly so) but people expect them to be just as well maintained as the freeways.

    Defensive driving!

Does defensive driving include almost peeing your pants? ‘Cause that’s what I felt this morning.

Hahaha! Those OH peeps would never survive around here! And what I found so funny is that IL people FREAK out over a little bit of rain, but drive like total jerks in the snow. Crazy, no?

OH wasn’t too bad when we drove through it a few years ago. The Capital building was kinda pretty. 🙂
